Ludmila Vartic case: Director of Hîncești district hospital submits resignation
Hîncești district hospital director submitted resignation today. The decision was taken in the context of the case of Ludmila Vartic, a kindergarten teacher from Hîncești, who is believed to have been a victim of domestic violence. The announcement was made today by the Minister of Health, Emil Ceban, after the Government meeting.
The official emphasized that the investigation initiated by the Ministry of Health will be completed on Friday, March 20 of this year.
“Within the framework of the investigation, all employees have given statements and explanations. The director of the Hîncești District Hospital submitted his resignation this morning, on his own initiative. He admitted that he did not report to the police the case from November 5, 2025, when the patient was hospitalized after taking five types of medication, 10 pills of each. She stayed in the hospital for two days. The case was not reported at the family’s request. During the investigation, the hospital director admitted his fault and submitted his resignation,” stated Emil Ceban.
The Minister of Health noted that, according to legal provisions, all suicide attempts must be reported.
“Such cases, registered within the structures of the healthcare system, must be reported to the nearest local or regional police sector. This is mandatory for all medical workers in the system and for all institutions,” Emil Ceban underlined.
The Ministry of Health has set up an investigation team and has sent circulars to all public medical and sanitary institutions. The documents reiterate the legal provisions and current regulations, so that medical staff promptly report to the prosecutor’s office and law enforcement bodies any suicide attempt or suspicion of violence.
Ludmila Vartic died after allegedly jumping from a block of flats in Chișinău on March 3 of this year. The woman is believed to have been subjected to violence for many years by her husband, Dumitru Vartic, who at the time of his wife’s death held the position of vice president of the Hîncești district.
The General Police Inspectorate has initiated two criminal proceedings in connection with the death of Ludmila Vartic. The first case concerns the circumstances of the woman’s death, while the second investigates the family situation. Dumitru Vartic has the status of suspect in the case of his wife’s suicide.
