Discover Moldova with #MOLDPRES: Lalova plums – authentic tradition, unique taste, international recognition
The Lalova plums from the northern Rezina district, renowned for their distinctive aroma and flavor, represent a remarkable example of a traditional Moldovan product with protected geographical indication. These exceptional plums are got thanks to a harmonious combination of climate, soil, water and sunshine, which gives the fruit unique organoleptic qualities and makes them easy to recognize.
A recipe passed down from generation to generation
The secret of the unique taste of Lalova plums lies not only in the exceptional natural conditions, but also in the culinary tradition preserved by locals since 1780. The practice of preparing plums stuffed with sweet walnut kernels and bathed in the region’s specific “stony wine” has been passed down from generation to generation, preserving the authentic recipe and the respect for natural raw ingredients.
Even though certain stages of the production process have been modernized for efficiency, the traditional taste and quality of Lalova plums have remained unchanged, which gives them a special place in the gastronomic culture of Moldova.
Official recognition and international support
Lalova plums are included in the national register of protected geographical indications, which ensures their legal protection and confirms the authenticity of the product. The promotion and protection of this traditional product have been supported by the Swiss Cooperation in Moldova through the Intellectual Property Project, in collaboration with the State Agency on Intellectual Property of Moldova (AGEPI).
This effort contributes not only to safeguarding the national culinary heritage, but also to increasing the international visibility of authentic Moldovan products, facilitating their access to foreign markets and promoting local traditions as an element of cultural and economic identity.
Living tradition and tourist appeal
Today, Lalova plums continue to be a symbol of regional gastronomic heritage, attracting both local consumers and tourists who wish to discover the authentic taste of traditional Moldovan products. Preserving this tradition highlights the commitment of local communities to keep ancient culinary practices alive and to harness natural resources in a sustainable way.
By combining exceptional natural qualities with a traditional recipe, Lalova plums remain a vivid example of successful authentic local production and a representative element of the gastronomic heritage of Moldova.
