Discover Moldova with #MOLDPRES: Men’s caroling groups, tradition, spirituality at Palanca, Calarasi district
Romanian traditions come to life in an authentic way at the “Casa Părintească” (Parents’ Home) Museum in Palanca, central Calarasi district, and the second edition of the “Men’s Caroling Groups” Festival has turned the museum’s courtyard into a true spiritual and cultural space.
The event brings back into the present the men’s winter customs from various areas of Moldova, promoting intangible cultural heritage and community spirit.
Men’s caroling groups from all over the country
The festival gathered caroling groups from the districts of Calarasi, Ungheni, Ialoveni and Rezina, who competed in various traditional moments: singing, performances with characters, such as the Goat, the Bear, the Little Horse, and traditional New Year wishes. The participants not only brought joy to the audience, but also helped pass on ancient customs to the younger generations, customs that are recognized worldwide and included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Authentic atmosphere and multisensory experience
The museum was adorned with fir branches, exhibitions of handicrafts made by folk artisans and traditional dishes, including festive braided breads and figurines, all of which completed the festive scene. The diplomas and acknowledgements awarded to participants highlighted the value of their contribution and strengthened the sense of community. Visitors had the chance to embark on a journey through time, feeling the close bond between people and nature, as well as the hope and optimism conveyed by winter traditions. The distinctive voices of the men echoed in the museum’s courtyard, announcing the Nativity, while the old texts and carols offered an opportunity to discover the “spiritual treasure chest” of our cultural identity.
Promoting local culture and tourism
The event is organized by the “Casa Părintească” Museum, led by Tatiana Popa, in collaboration with the Culture and Tourism Department. Through this initiative, the institution manages to raise public awareness, keep Romanian traditions alive and promote Moldova as an authentic cultural and tourist destination, where visitors can experience winter holidays in a traditional setting, full of charm and spirituality.
Thus, the festival provides not only entertainment, but also a lesson on identity, heritage and Romanian national values, highlighting Moldova as a land of living traditions and genuine hospitality.
Men’s caroling groups represent an ancient custom preserved especially in the villages of Moldova, involving groups of men who go from house to house in the community, performing traditional texts and ritual dances (the Goat, the Bear, the Little Horse). The UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage includes such customs that reflect the creativity, spirituality and identity of a community. Events like this support cultural tourism, attracting local and international visitors interested in authentic, traditional experiences.
