Fathers with four, more children can benefit from free medical insurance in Moldova

Chisinau, 18 January /MOLDPRES/ – The fathers with four or more children will be eligible for free medical insurance. The Constitutional Court (CC) has established today that the legal provisions, which only allow mothers with four or more children to benefit from medical insurance from the Government, are contrary to the Constitution.
According to the Court’s data, the fact that this right was not provided for fathers violates Articles 16 and 47 of the Constitution, which guarantee the principle of equality before the law and public authorities and the right to social assistance and protection.
The Court noted that the progress of gender equality is today a major goal among Council of Europe member states and only very strong reasons can justify gender – specific treatment.
The ruling was handed down after the Court examined a referral from several MPs which noted discriminatory treatment of mothers and fathers caring for four or more children.
The decision of the High Court is final, can not be subject to any appeal, enters into force on the date of its adoption and is published in the Official Journal of Moldova (MORM).
