Intercity travel tickets become dearer in Moldova

16:02 | 27.12.2019 Category: Economic

Chisinau, 27 December /MOLDPRES/ – The travel rates for passenger transport on intercity routes increase starting 01 January 2020 from MDL 0.48/km up to MDL 0.60 – MDL 0.70/km, depending upon comfort category. The announcement has been made, on Friday, by the Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure (MEI).

Thus, the tariff will be increased by MDL 0.12/km for basic comfort category and by MDL 0.22/km for higher comfort category. For example, if at present the ticket price for a journey of 25 km is MDL 12.00, after adjusting the price, it will be MDL 15.00. The decision was made following consultations of MEI and carriers.

"The issue has been neglected for several years. Now we are in a position to choose whether or not we have transportation in general. This is why it was decided to apply a mechanism for adjusting the tariffs, but that will be correlated with the increase of quality in transport”, declared today, at a press conference, Secretary of State of MEI, Iulian Postica.

Following the decision announced today, all transport units travelling on long distance routes will be classified according to comfort class. This will be attributed following a test, which will be carried out on 01 February – 01 October 2020. Iulian Postica has specified that cars that will not be in any comfort category, will not be able to provide services.

In recent months, the carriers have organised more protests and demanded tariff increases. They argued their request that the ticket prices have not changed since 2013, and the carriers bear losses.
