Moldovan composer would have turned 95 today

Chisinau, 27 February /MOLDPRES/- Composer, pianist Vasile Zagorschi, People's Artist, winner of the State Prize, would have turned 95 today.

He was born on February 27, 1926 in Shevchenko (Caramahmed), Chilia, Ismail County, today Ukraine. He studied at the Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu High School in Chisinau (1941-1944) and at the Alexandru Lahovari Gymnasium in Râmnicu-Vâlcea, Romania (1944-1945).

He started his professional activity as a teacher of music-theoretical disciplines at a high school in Chisinau, then he was head of studies at the School of Music Stefan Neaga (1947-1956), lecturer, deputy head at Gavriil Musicescu State Conservatory in Chisinau (1956-1959).

He served as director of the Opera and Ballet Theater in Chisinau (1959-1962), then worked as a teacher at the Department of Music and Composition Theory and vice-rector of the State Conservatory in Chisinau (today the Academy of Music, Theater and Arts Plastics), lecturer at the Department of Theory and Composition. For 25 years he was president of the Union of Composers and Musicologists of the Republic of Moldova (1964-1990). He was a member of the Executive Committee of the UNESCO International Music Council between 1978-1990, a member of the Union of Filmmakers of Moldova.

In 1960 he was awarded the honorary title Honored Artist (1960), in 1968 - State Prize of RSSM and in 1982 - honorary title People's Artist. He has won numerous awards from the Union of Composers and Musicologists of Moldova. In 1997 he was awarded the Order of the Republic. Vasile Zagorschi passed away on 1 October 2003.
