Moldovan government approves new measures for backing farmers

Chisinau, 3 November /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet of ministers today approved a string of amendments, which regard the subsidized insurance in agriculture. The completions made are aimed at protecting the farmers’ interests and extending the possibilities of insuring the agricultural assets, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.

According to the new provisions, the farmers will be able to ensure not only the quantity of the harvest, but also its quality. The completion is important, in the context when the insured risk sometimes does not produce quantitative losses of the harvest, but significantly hits its quality, for instance, the exterior look of the production.

Also, the cabinet approved a new list of risks and agricultural assets, the insurance premiums of which are subsidized from the National Fund for the Development of Agriculture and Rural Environment. The assets were included in the list according to such criteria as the size of investments and the importance of certain crops or species of animals for the national economy and food security. At the same time, each agricultural asset is related to the risks specific to it: drought, floods, hail, diseases or pathologies of animals, etc. Thus, if a risk occurs, farmers will be financially insured and will be able to carry out their activity in continuation.

The document also sees the exclusion of the ceiling of subsidies for different types of crops, as well as of the compulsoriness of presenting the certificate from the mayoralty on the existence of insured assets.
