Joint Declaration of Conference of Parliament Speakers: EU must continue proactive support of Moldova's accession

Chisinau, 25 April /MOLDPRES/ - The European Union and the member states must continue the proactive support of the process of Moldova’s accession to EU. This is stipulated in a joint declaration adopted at the Conference of Parliament Speakers of the European Union, held in Prague, the parliament’s communication and public relations department has reported.    

Attending the event was Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, along with another over 50 speakers, as well as European Parliament Speaker Roberta Metsola.   

The document provides for the support for the European Commission’s decisions to give Moldova, Ukraine and Bosnia & Herzegovina the status of country candidate for accession to the European Union and the status of potential candidate to Georgia. In the context, the Declaration reads that, despite the present international situation, EU must continue backing the processes of integration of these states through a regular and deep dialogue, taking into account the progress made in the implementation of the key reforms and fulfilling the conditions.      

Also, through the declaration adopted, the participants in the Conference of Parliament Speakers of the European Union condemn Russia’s war against Ukraine. The document reads that this war showed the importance of EU’s interconnections with other states in the fields of security, stability and prosperity. In the context, emphasis is put on the need to consolidate the dialogue and diplomatic cooperation between the European Union and the neighbour countries. At the same time, in the Declaration, the participants in the Conference expressed appreciation for the solidarity proved by the Moldovan authorities and citizens for the Ukrainian refugees hosted by Moldova.     

The declaration passed also refers to the importance of the network of inter-parliamentary cooperation.     

Moldova for the first time ever participates in the Conference of Parliament Speakers of the European Union as country candidate for accession to EU. The event represents a forum of discussions, exchange of opinions, information and experience on the role and responsibilities of the national parliaments in the European structure, as well as the instruments of inter-parliamentary cooperation in the European affairs sector. The parliament speakers from the EU member states, the European Parliament president and the heads of the parliaments of the candidate countries took part in the conference.
