Moldovan deputy premier attends NATO Summit in Vilnius

Chisinau, July 11. /MOLDPRES/- Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration is participating in NATO Summit in Vilnius, at the meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the NATO countries and partner states, the MAEIE press service has reported.

During the meeting, the Moldovan official presented the developments related to regional security, the risks generated by the war launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the measures we are taking to counter the complex challenges to the security of the Republic of Moldova. Popescu emphasized the need to promote regional security and stability through measures to strengthen democratic, economic, energy, military resilience and increase the ability to counter new types of challenges.

"Also, we reviewed the current priorities of the Moldovan authorities among them the implementation of reforms to advance the process of EU accession and modernization of the country, as well as ensuring the stability and security of the state. At the same time, I emphasized that a pressing task is the modernization of the national security and defense sector in accordance with the new developments and requirements of the current security environment. We reiterated our country's interest in implementing practical bilateral programs, including the NATO assistance package for strengthening Moldova's security and defense capabilities, the professional development program and many others.

NATO ministers appreciated Moldova's contribution to strengthening regional security by participating in peacekeeping operations, including KFOR in Kosovo. Also, the openness of the organization to further support the reform and modernization processes in Moldova was reiterated.

On July 11-12, Popescu is participating in NATO Summit in Vilnius.
