NATO asked Russia to withdraw troops from Transnistria

Chisinau, July 12. /MOLDPRES/- NATO requested the Russian Federation to withdraw its troops from the territory of the Republic of Moldova, stationed in the Transnistrian region, under the aegis of a "pacification mission" and at the same time reiterated "support for territorial integrity and sovereignty" of our country, "within its internationally recognized borders". The position was expressed by the North Atlantic Alliance at the NATO Summit, organized on July 11-12, in Vilnius, Lithuania.

"We are firm in our support for Moldova's right to decide its own future and the path of foreign policy without external interference, and we fully respect Moldova's constitutional neutrality. NATO is stepping up its political and practical support to strengthen its resilience and maintain its political independence in deteriorating security environment", a press release issued after the NATO Summit reads.

At the same time, "the allies welcome Moldova's efforts to promote democratic reforms and are committed to supporting Moldova as it advances its European integration. "NATO will continue to provide practical assistance through the enhanced defense capacity building package as Moldova works to strengthen its security and defense capabilities and modernize its armed forces," NATO says.

Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration also participates in NATO Summit in Vinius on July 11-12. The official presented the developments related to regional security, the risks generated by the war launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the measures we are taking to counter the complex challenges to the security of the Republic of Moldova.
