Chisinau, July 17. /MOLDPRES/- The first calibration and sorting line for cherries from the Gagauz region was presented to fruit producers in the region. The presentation took place during the seminar "Modern production and post-harvest technologies of fruit and table grapes for the European Union market", organized by the Moldova Fruit Association in partnership with USAID project Competitiveness and Rural Resilience in Moldova.

Vera Iabanji, the manager of Biyaz Salkim company told the more than 70 farmers in the region who attended this event that investments in quality fruit production and GlobalG.A.P., GRASP and SMETA certification have helped the company to export the entire cherry crop of 2023 to the Netherlands. The buyer is a company with whom Biyaz Salkim has established business relations in previous years.

Seminar participants confirmed that targeting new markets has become a necessity. "Farmers are more determined than ever to improve the quality of fruit, investing in modern production technologies, new varieties, harvesting and post-harvest equipment - sorting and calibrating the fruit to align with the requirements and meet the standards of quality and harmlessness on the markets from the West", estimates USAID.

On June 1 - July 11, over 13,300 tons of cherries were exported from Moldova. The geography of exports is significantly different from last year. This season, Moldovan cherries reached 13 countries. The list of new destinations includes: Great Britain, Italy, Spain, Belgium. Thanks to investments in recent years in modern varieties, sorting and cooling equipment, GlobalG.A.P./GRASP certification, Moldovan producers are able to compete on the international market.
