Chisinau, July 20. /MOLDPRES/- Basic social services for the elderly will be set up and expanded in 50 localities in the country. The objective is included in the National Program on active aging for 2023-2027, which was published in the Official Journal today.

The document sees the provision in the coming years of about three thousand elderly people with technical assistive devices, the initiation in 50 localities of community services and programs for the mobilization of elderly people, the expansion of the "Cultural Voucher" program for five thousand elderly people with low incomes. At the same time, the Program for providing digital equipment for 25 thousand low-income seniors will be implemented and opportunities for lifelong education will be expanded through the implementation of the "University for the Third Age" concept.

Through this program, the authorities aim to further develop the systems of social assistance, health, education, culture, sports, which allow the use of the potential of active and healthy aging, including by ensuring an inclusive labor market for all ages, the development of digital skills and active participation in decision-making and community development processes.

The estimated value of the financial resources needed to implement the Program is 42.95 million lei (over 2.1 million euros).

According to the data of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, over the last six years, the number of the population aged 60 and over, which is currently about 24% of the country's population, has increased by over 4%, and the rapid pace of population aging causes the share of the elderly to increase significantly.
