National agency for prevention of violence against women and domestic violence to be set up in Moldova

Chisinau, 20 July /MOLDPRES/ - A national agency for the prevention and combating of violence against women and domestic violence will be set up in Moldova. The parliament has voted a draft law to this effect in the first reading.
The Agency will be subordinated to the government. The authority will be provided powers of coordinating the inter-institutional activity in the field of prevention and combating the violence against women and the domestic violence, of implementing national programmes, on monitoring and assessing the public policies in the sector, of facilitating the cooperation with the civil society. A national coordination council in the field of prevention and combating the violence against women and domestic violence will be created under the Agency. The council will be made up of representatives of the central authorities and civil society, as well as other parties interested.
At the same time, the parliament suggests the setting up of an inter-ministerial council in the field of rehabilitation and social protection of offences’ victims at the Labour and Social Protection Ministry.
The legislative initiative belongs to an MP of the Action and Solidarity Party, Doina Gherman. ‘’Each third woman of Moldova has suffered and continues to suffer from one or another form of violence. I mean here the domestic violence, physical, sexual, psychological and economic one. Seventy five per cent of the country’s women from north to south are beaten, are abused, are humiliated and harassed daily, sometimes in their own homes,’’ lawmaker Doina Gherman said.
The draft law is to be voted in the second reading.
