Centre for Strategic Communication and Combating Misinformation to be set up in Moldova

Chisinau, 31 July /MOLDPRES/ - The Centre for Strategic Communication and Combating the Misinformation will be set up in Moldova. The parliament approved a draft law on the creation of the concerned entity in the second reading today; the legislative initiative belongs to President Maia Sandu.  

The aforementioned Centre will have the task to consolidate the cooperation between institutions in the fight against the misinformation, manipulation of information and foreign interferences, which pose danger or can be detrimental to the national security and jeopardize the fulfillment of the national interests. The institution will implement the measures needed, in order to ensure the security of the information space and enhance the degree of the society’s resilience to the threats.       

The measures carried out by the government, in relation to other authorities and the private environment, will have a character of recommendation. The Centre will have right to submit to the public authorities proposals on the amendment of the normative framework, as well as to notify the law-enforcement bodies, if infringements of the national legislation in the field are detected. 

The Centre for Strategic Communication and Combating the Misinformation will be led by a director, appointed to office by the parliament, at a proposal by Moldova’s president, for a five-year term. The candidacy of the director will be selected following a public contest organized by the Moldovan president. The director will be assisted by a deputy director, appointed by Moldova’s president, at a proposal by the Centre’s director. At the same time, a Council will be set up at the Centre, made up of 11 members, nominated by the public authorities and the civil society, which will assess the institution’s work.       

The parliament, through the competent parliamentary commissions, will exercise the parliamentary control over the Centre’s activity.
