General local elections taking place in Moldova today

Chisinau, Nov. 5 /MOLDPRES/- General local elections are taking place today in the Republic of Moldova. Citizens with the right to vote are expected at the 1,958 polling stations to elect mayors and councilors. The voting procedure started at 07:00 and will end at 21:00.

As a result of the local elections, 898 mayors and 11,058 local councilors are to be elected. Over 3,900 people who want to occupy the seat of mayor and more than 56 thousand citizens who want to be councilors apply for these positions.

In total, 7,669,667 ballots in Romanian and Russian were printed for the election, and 5.7 million lei were spent for this purpose. 

Ballots are distinguished by color.

According to the Central Electoral Commission, the number of voters included in the State Register of Voters, on October 2, 2023, is 3,302,399. Of the total number, 2,762,125 citizens with the right to vote are assigned to administrative-territorial units of the level II. The difference includes people who have the citizenship of the Republic of Moldova, but do not have a home registration or residence, including those who have emigrated authorized abroad and citizens with the right to vote having their domicile registered in the administrative-territorial units to the left of the Dniester, which are temporarily out of sovereign control of the constitutional authorities of the Republic of Moldova.

For this year's general local elections, more than 154 million lei were allocated from the state budget.

The vote will be monitored by more than 1,500 national and international observers.

The last general local elections were held on October 20, 2019. The mandate of local elected officials is four years.
