Chisinau, 14 November /MOLDPRES/ - The Food Bank of Moldova, with the support of the European Union, today launched the online platform www.donezalimente.md. The new platform represents an innovating digital project which will facilitate the logistic process of recovery of the surplus of food products from the agro-food chain and redistribution to the services of social canteen and other social services.

Thus, the economic agents from the agro-food chain will register on the platform as donors of food products, specifying the quantity, type and localization of the food products they have. On the other hand, the organizations providing social services which deliver food to people at risk will register on the platform as beneficiaries of the Food Bank. As a result, the social service will directly take over the food products available from the donor, without the need for them to initially get in the deposit of the Food Bank.

„The platform www.donezalimente.md was created, in order to connect the people in need with those who can provide support. Thus, we contribute to a fairer and more inclusive society. At the same time, we actively contribute to the creation of a culture of solidarity, in order to reduce the food prodigality. The European Union backs the work of the Food Bank, at is promotes the respect for food, as well as the value of the work of those who cultivate, make and distribute food products. The recovery of the food products good for consumption reduces the dissipation of food products. Such a mechanism is widely implemented in the European Union and has recently spread in Moldova. We welcome this,’’ Ambassador of the European Union to Moldova Jānis Mažeiks said.

The executive director of the Food Bank, Oleg Paraschiv, said that, through the platform, decision-makers would constantly monitor the recovery and distribution of food products, ‘’so that we preserve as many as possible food products in human consumption and not turn them into waste.’’

During one year of EU’s support for the Food Bank of Moldova, about 90 tons of food products have been recovered and were distributed to 39 social services. Over 5,000 people benefited from recovered food products within them.
