Chișinău and Kyiv discuss grid synchronization and joint energy infrastructure projects

The energy dimension was one of the central topics of discussion between the delegation of the Republic of Moldova, led by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. Officials discussed the energy infrastructure in Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova in the context of the consequences of Russian attacks, which have caused power outages, including in several localities in our country.

"Volodymyr Zelensky and Alexandru Munteanu discussed the response to threats coming from Russia and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation in the energy sector," the Ministry of Energy's press release reads.

Another topic was the expansion of cooperation between the electricity transmission system operators Ukrenergo and Moldelectrica. The parties emphasized the need to synchronize their grids, strengthen balancing capacities, and sign an agreement on cross-border electricity flows and emergency support mechanisms.

At the same time, the parties reiterated the interest in developing joint infrastructure projects, including the 330 kV Bălți – Dnestrovsk overhead power line.

The Ukrainian side expressed willingness to supply coal for the Cuciurgan power plant (Moldovskaya GRES). Zelensky thanked the Government of the Republic of Moldova for the humanitarian support provided to Ukraine, including generators, transformers, and other equipment needed to repair energy infrastructure affected by attacks by the Russian Federation.

Munteanu is on his first official visit to Kyiv. He also held a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Yuliia Svyrydenko. The two prime ministers discussed deepening bilateral cooperation, European integration, regional security and concrete projects in the economic, energy and infrastructure sectors.
