Moldovan government announces completion of 88 km of national roads in first 100 days in office
The government has completed 88 kilometers of rehabilitated national roads and bypasses, signed the contract for the construction of the Cimislia bypass and launched the feasibility study for 125 kilometers of the A8 Ungheni–Chisinau highway. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan today referred to completed and ongoing infrastructure projects during at a news conference on the cabinet’s results after its first 100 days in office.
„In the first 100 days, we completed 88 kilometers of national roads, rehabilitated roads, and new bypasses,” the PM said.
Among the projects mentioned by the prime minister, there were the improvement of road connections with Ukraine, the diversion of heavy traffic away from villages near Giurgiulesti and the signing of the contract for the construction of the Cimislia bypass.
At the same time, the feasibility study was launched for 125 kilometers of the A8 Ungheni–Chisinau highway, a project expected to connect the capital to the European highways’ network.
„We launched the feasibility study for 125 kilometers of the A8 Ungheni–Chisinau highway, a road that should connect the capital directly to the European highway network. The first highway in Moldova’s history. After all these years, this country deserves to have a highway,” Vasile Tofan said.
The prime minister also referred to the works for a European-gauge railway connection to Ungheni and Romania, noting that infrastructure is not limited to large-scale projects.
„But infrastructure does not mean only projects worth hundreds of millions. In recent months, 100 projects, more than 100 local projects, have been completed,” Tofan said.
According to the data presented by the PM, approximately 150 kilometers of local roads and 28 kilometers of sidewalks have been built through the Europe is Close programme, benefiting around 140,000 people. Through the European Village programme, 285 kilometers of water pipelines have been built for approximately 61,000 people.
Following the budget revision, the cabinet additionally allocated one billion lei for local infrastructure, particularly in rural communities.
„For someone living in a village, one kilometer of water pipeline can matter just as much as a highway,” the head of Government emphasized.
Another issue addressed by Vasile Tofan was the authorities’ capacity to prepare and implement infrastructure projects. The PM noted that the problem was not only related to the availability of financial resources, but also to the institutions’ ability to turn funds into completed projects.
„One of Moldova’s problems is not only the lack of money. It is also the ability to turn money into completed projects,” the official said.
In the context, the government is strengthening its capacity to prepare and implement projects through the Moldova Project structure. According to the prime minister, it will bring together the existing project implementation units at various ministries, in order to concentrate expertise and reduce administrative costs.
„Not to create yet another agency. On the contrary, to consolidate all those very small implementation units from different ministries into a single one, so that we can save money, not waste it, as sometimes happens,” Tofan noted.
He specified that the new structure would bring together specialists in such fields as engineering, public procurement and management of contracts and projects.
„And to bring together the expertise that is currently so dispersed: engineers, procurement specialists and managers of contracts and projects. We want to put all of them to work on the country’s major investments,” the prime minister said.
At the same time, the official noted that the government had launched the www.ConstruimMoldova.gov.md platform, where citizens can follow information about the stages of projects’ implementation and the spending of public funds on infrastructure.
„And we have done it in a very transparent manner. We launched the www.ConstruimMoldova.gov.md website, where every citizen can check every day the stage reached by each project and where infrastructure funds are being spent,” Vasile Tofan said.
Prime Minister Vasile Tofan held a press conference today dedicated to presenting the activity report for the first 100 days of his term. The document compiles 182 results, decisions and actions completed or initiated by the cabinet, aimed at accelerating structural reforms, stimulating investments, modernizing infrastructure and advancing accession negotiations with the European Union amid regional economic and security challenges.
