Moldovan PM discusses with mayors of Chisinau suburbs

Prime Minister Dorin Recean has had a working meeting with the mayors of the settlements from the Chisinau municipality, at the government’s headquarters. The discussions focused on projects carried out in the suburbs and priorities concerning local development.

The PM urged local authorities to efficiently use the budgets available in the upcoming period, thanks to the financial package provided by the EU, amounting to 1.9 billion euros, as there will be more local infrastructure development projects available. At the same time, Prime Minister Dorin Recean emphasized the need to strengthen administrative capacity locally, in the context of preparing for the efficient access to pre-accession funds, which may be available starting from 2028.

In recent years, the government has invested, through the European Village Programme alone, about 200 million lei in the suburbs of the Moldovan capital. Roads and courtyards have been rehabilitated, medical and educational institutions were modernized and equipped, water and sewage systems were built, and parks and sports fields were created.

“There is still much to be done and we will succeed only together with the mayors and the inhabitants of the suburbs. We know the direction we need to go, and we have the right partners. The future of the country, the future of development projects depends on our unity on the path to EU accession,” highlighted the PM.

At the meeting, the sides also analyzed challenges faced by the mayors. Among them, the participants in the meeting emphasized the problems caused by massive urban sprawl, sewage systems, and the limited capacity of water treatment plants, as well as the presence of stray dogs and the lack of waste sorting infrastructure. In the context, the prime minister welcomed the association of the municipalities of Budesti, Cruzesti, and Tohatin to build a modern treatment plant.

“Such initiatives represent a very good example of effective cooperation among local authorities. I encourage other mayors to adopt this model, in order to meet the needs of your communities. Suburbs’ development will continue at an accelerated pace and it is essential to plan long-term projects and investments, so that you are ready for the challenges that will arise in the coming years,” Prime Minister Dorin Recean said.
