Head of State Maia Sandu visited Mărculești International Airport (AIM) on 1 August and spoke with the administration and technical team about plans to modernize the airport to develop a viable platform for passenger and cargo air transport. The official also had a discussion with residents of Mărculești and neighboring villages, who expressed support for the initiative.
“A few days ago, the Parliament passed a law establishing that Chișinău International Airport will invest in the modernization of Mărculești Airport. I spoke with the residents of the town and nearby villages and was glad to see support for this initiative. The modernization of the airport will bring development opportunities and create new jobs for the entire northern region of the country. In the context of false information that emerged, I made it clear that it is a civil airport,” Maia Sandu said.
The airport already benefits from a 2500-meter runway, certified internationally, with a load-bearing capacity that allows the operation of large aircraft. With investments in airport infrastructure and safety and security systems, AIM can become a strategic logistics hub for the northern part of the country.
The impact of the initiatives on local development and the national economy was discussed by the head of state with the residents of Mărculești. The President mentioned that many of the ongoing projects across the country are supported by development partners, so it's important to stay close to our friends in the large European family.
In the town of Mărculești, through the European Village program, the public street lighting has been modernized, and currently, the roof of the cultural house is being repaired. At Florești district level, the program has brought investments of about 140 million lei.
