Moldovan parliament heard report on observance of human rights and freedoms for 2022

Chisinau, July 14. /MOLDPRES/- The report on observance of human rights and freedoms in the Republic of Moldova in 2022 was heard today in the plenary session of the Parliament. People's Advocate Ceslav Panico and People's Advocate for Child's Rights Maia Bănărescu presented the information.

The rapporteurs said that during the last year, due to the war of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, the authorities had to make significant efforts to ensure the respect of the rights of both the citizens of the Republic of Moldova and the Ukrainians who took refuge in our country. Ceslav Panico referred to the way in which fundamental human rights were respected: the right to health, to a fair trial, to social assistance, to work and to the protection of work or the right to freedom and safety. He noted the ratification of the Istanbul Convention, which is a progress in preventing violence against women and domestic violence.

Also at today's meeting, information was presented on respect of child's rights in 2022. Maia Bănărescu referred to the situation of respect for the child's right to education, the guarantee of the right to name and citizenship, the protection of refugee children. The report also found information on the situation of children who have a street lifestyle and children with delinquent behavior. Bănărescu also referred to the creation last year of the Children's Advisory Council. It was set up to consult the children's opinion on the respect of their rights, the respect of the right to opinion and participation, as well as to establish the priority directions of the ombudsman's activity.

Data on preventing torture were also presented in the plenary session of the Parliament. 

The authorities mentioned in the report are to inform the Parliament about the implementation of the recommendations. At the same time, it is recommended that the parliament standing committees hold public hearings on the issues addressed in the Report, to contribute to the improvement of the normative framework in the protection of human rights and freedoms, to strengthen the function of parliamentary control in the field.
