Chisinau, July 31. /MOLDPRES/- Romanian MEP Corina Creţu believes that restoring ties with the Republic of Moldova is a historical duty and Ungheni bridge, financed from non-refundable European funds will improve traffic to Romania and facilitate Moldova's access to the West, via Unirii Highway.

According to the MEP, the law on A8 Târgul Mureș - Iași - Ungheni highway provides for the construction of 320 km of road, and for this to be completed up to the border with the Republic of Moldova, a bridge will be built over the Prut in Ungheni by 2030. The bridge it is financed with non-refundable European money through the Connecting Europe Facility, worth 16.5 million euros.

"Restoring ties with the Republic of Moldova is a historical duty, in the past Moldova and Bessarabia were interconnected by over 22 bridges, most of which were destroyed by the Russian army to prevent free movement between the two regions. I am also pleased that about 50 kilometers of the A8 highway are finally being put out to tender and funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Ensuring the connection between Moldova, Bessarabia with Transylvania and with the rest of Europe with the completion of the A8 and A3 highways will lead to better connectivity between the historical regions and with European markets", said Corina Crețu.

The MEP noted that the infrastructure project aims to support the consolidation of economic, social and fraternal relations between Romania and the Republic of Moldova.
