Chisinau, 31 July /MOLDPRES/ - The emergency state was extended by 60 days in Moldova starting from 3 August 2023. At a proposal by the government, the parliament today adopted a draft decision providing for this with 55 votes for. The parliament’s opposition boycotted the plenary meeting.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean came up with a request to prolong the state of emergency at the parliament’s rostrum. He referred to the war in Ukraine, as well as to the hybrid war waged by Russia against Moldova.

According to the PM, the need of this decision is triggered by the risks and threats caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine. ‘’The war is quite close to the border; we see what is happening in Zaporizhia and we run the risk to have an emergency situation there, which might trigger migration, including through Moldova. Yet, we should be attentive to the hybrid war of Russia against Moldova. I want to tell you, dear colleagues, that the government had acted responsible on the entire period since the establishment of the emergency state. It used this instrument exclusively in order to solve the citizens’ problems, to settle the problems dealing with the migration and did not abuse of it. The need to extend the state of emergency comes namely from the fact that the war still persists. The war is still close to us and the cabinet needs to intervene promptly  when the national security is endangered or when we should ensure the continuity of the infrastructure services, electric energy and gas services,’’  the prime minister said.

Thus, during the emergency state, Moldova’s Commission for Emergency Situations will issue compulsory and executory instructions for the heads of the central and local public administration authorities, of economic agents, of public institutions, as well as for Moldova’s citizens and other people who are on the country’s territory.

The emergency state was established on 24 February 2022, with the unleashing of the war in Ukraine.
