Libraries of Moldova to receive donation of books on behalf of Romania
Chisinau, 8 October /MOLDPRES/ - The public libraries of Moldova will receive over 100,000 volumes of books in physical format and the same number in digital one. This donation, carried out by the Department for the Relation with Moldova (DRRM) of Romania’s government, represents the biggest cultural project carried out by Romania in the last 30 years.
According to DRRM, the initiative titled, Books in Romanian language for libraries from Moldova, has the goal to develop the Romanian ethnic, cultural and linguistic identity.
„The promotion and cultivation of the Romanian language in Moldova is a priority for DRRM and I am happy that we have managed to allocate a budget of about 4 million RON (Romanian lei) for the procurement of valuable books, written in the Romanian language, of classic and contemporary authors, Romanian and foreign,’’ the state secretary of DRRM, Adrian Dupu, said.
Representatives of Moldova’s National Library (BNRM) highlighted the importance of this donation for encouraging the reading among the new generations.
„A major problem of the public libraries from Moldova is the lack of new books in the Romanian language. Most books are old, deteriorated. Moldova’s citizens are interested in books in the Romanian language and the new books would lead to the encouraging of reading among the young people and adults,’’ say BNRM representatives.
The project, Books in Romanian language for libraries from Moldova, started in April 2024 and now it got to the phase of effective donation to the National Library of Moldova – an institution which will subsequently distribute the volumes to the public libraries in 200 settlements.
The official ceremony of donation will take place on the Great National Assembly Square from Chisinau on 10 October 2024, in which officials from Moldova and Romania will participate.
