The Meeting of Romanian National Theatres began on Wednesday in Chișinău with William Shakespeare’s Richard III, directed by Petru Hadârcă. Present at the opening performance, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan emphasized the importance of the Meeting for cultural life and the role of theatre in society.
“We have such a beautiful event, bringing together so many theatres from Moldova, Romania and Ukraine, while the cultural center of this region is in Chișinău. Theatre is also a mirror for all of us, because it makes us see ourselves in a mirror, and we very much hope that, in this mirror, we will see fewer Richards. As long as people come to the theatre, good will defeat evil, and culture will defeat barbarism,” the prime minister said.
Richard III performance, presented by Mihai Eminescu National Theatre of Chișinău, is a production about power, manipulation and the consequences of tolerating evil. The performance launched the program of the 11th edition of the Meeting.
For 12 days, Chișinău will host theatre performances and events, bringing together institutions from the Republic of Moldova, Romania and Ukraine. According to the organizers, this year’s edition brings together 19 theatres and artists from 14 cities, including Bucharest, Iași, Sibiu, Craiova, Cluj, Timișoara, Galați, Cahul, Bălți, Kyiv and Chișinău.
The program includes performances, exhibitions, conferences, meetings with theatre professionals and radio theatre auditions. The festival will conclude on September 21 with Caligula, presented by Ivan Franko National Academic Drama Theatre of Kyiv.
“We are what we love…” is the theme of the 11th edition, which will take place from September 9 to 21.
