PHOTO // Moldovan PM says knowing another language, another culture makes Moldova richer

Moldova is strong when its citizens, regardless of the language they speak, their traditions, or their family history, manage to live together in peace and with mutual respect. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan has made statements to this effect in Taraclia, during the 25th edition of the Unity through Diversity Ethnocultural Festival. The event brings together participants from Moldova, Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine.

“Moldova is strong only when we know how to live together. In different languages. With different traditions and different family histories, but in peace, with respect for one another and with the feeling that this is our common country,” said Vasile Tofan.

The PM touched upon the Bulgarian community in Taraclia and the preservation of its traditions and cultural ties with Bulgaria.

“In Taraclia, I saw once again what this cultural richness means. The Bulgarian community of Taraclia has carefully preserved an impressive history and deep ties with Bulgaria. And in an increasingly divided world, with a war right at our border, our best response is unity and mutual respect,” said prime minister.

Vasile Tofan emphasized the importance of preserving the languages and traditions of communities of Moldova, mentioning Bulgarians, Gagauz and Ukrainians.

“I want Bulgarians in Moldova to speak Bulgarian, Gagauz people to preserve the Gagauz language, and Ukrainians to preserve the Ukrainian language—as every community passes on to its children the language of their parents and grandparents. The fact that we know another language and another culture does not make us any less Moldovan; it makes Moldova richer,” the prime minister stated.

In his message, the PM drew a parallel between the traditional Bulgarian horo dance and the Moldovan hora, highlighting the idea of community and solidarity.

“It is no coincidence that Bulgarians call it horo, while we call it hora. It is almost the same word and expresses exactly the same thing: you cannot dance the hora alone. To move forward, you must hold the hand of the person next to you and feel a common rhythm, regardless of language or origins,” said Vasile Tofan.

The prime minister also said Moldova must focus on the elements that bring communities together and on mutual respect.

“We need fewer things that divide us and more wisdom to reach out and join hands. In our Moldova, in this common hora, there is room for absolutely every citizen,” Vasile Tofan concluded.

The Unity through Diversity Festival is held for the 25th time this year. The schedule includes folk ensembles from Moldova, Bulgaria, Romania and Ukraine, ethnographic exhibitions, fairs featuring artisans and local producers, as well as cultural and artistic activities.
