An exhibition dedicated to Irish journalist and activist Michael Davitt, who at the beginning of the 20th century was a special correspondent in Bessarabia and reported on the pogrom against Jews, could be organized at the National Library of the Republic of Moldova. The proposal was discussed on September 14, during a meeting between Ireland’s Ambassador to Chișinău Myles Geiran and director general of the National Library of the Republic of Moldova Elena Pintilei and representatives of the institution.
Another project discussed during the meeting concerns the organization of a film screening followed by a public discussion about the myths and representations associated with the character of Dracula, who became famous through the novelDraculaby Irish writer Bram Stoker.According to the National Library, the discussions focused on identifying new opportunities for cultural cooperation and developing joint activities aimed at bringing the public in the Republic of Moldova closer to Ireland’s heritage and culture.
During the meeting, the programs developed by the National Library of the Republic of Moldova were presented, along with their impact on the community and the library’s role in promoting democracy, the rule of law, and access to knowledge.
The ambassador’s visit took place in the context of strengthening Moldovan-Irish relations and intensifying cooperation between the two countries in several areas. Ambassador Myles Geiran also met with Ministry of Foreign Affairs State Secretary Corina Călugăru. The discussions focused on Moldovan-Irish cooperation within international organizations, as well as the two countries’ candidacies for the UN Human Rights Council, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to mutual support.Ambassador Myles Geiran reconfirmed Ireland’s support for the Republic of Moldova’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council and praised the cooperation between the two countries within international organizations.
