Moldovan energy minister says higher electricity prices in last October due to regional developments
The higher prices for electricity purchased by Energocom in last October were caused by developments on the regional market, influenced by Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu has made statements to this effect.
“Prices in the region have been volatile and higher due to attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. On October 10, Ukraine lost 2.8 GW of generation capacity and consequently started purchasing more energy from the European market, which caused prices to fluctuate,” said Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu today.
When asked if the increase in purchase prices will lead to higher tariffs for consumers, the minister noted that the National Energy Regulatory Agency is in charge of setting tariffs.
According to the official, at present, Moldova secures its electricity needs from both local sources and imports from Romania and Ukraine. Additionally, the decrease in local renewable energy production is compensated by the energy produced by the thermal power plants of Chisinau and Balti.
“Part of the electricity that no longer comes from local renewable sources is compensated by the electricity produced at the thermal power plants of Chisinau and Balti. Currently, the necessary electricity difference is purchased from the Romanian or Ukrainian markets,” said Dorin Junghietu.
The Energocom company on November 4 informed that, in October 2025, it had purchased about 387.3 thousand MWh of electricity at a weighted average price of 132.44 euros/MWh.
For comparison, in September, about 322.9 thousand MWh of electricity were purchased at a weighted average price of 113.96 euros/MWh, and in August, the purchase price was 121.17 euros/MWh.
