Government considers solutions for continuous supply of petroleum products to Chișinău International Airport
Government is urgently discussing the situation created in the context of the sanctions applied to Lukoil company and possible implications on the supply of petroleum products to Chișinău International Airport.
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) Vladimir Bolea stated that the situation is being closely monitored, and currently, the functioning of critical infrastructure is not affected.
“Lukoil is a large-scale economic agent, which plays a significant role in the petroleum products market in the Republic of Moldova. It is an importer and wholesale seller of petroleum products and, at the same time, the sole fuel supplier for Chișinău International Airport. Additionally, the company privately owns the storage and aircraft refueling infrastructure within the airport premises,” said Bolea.
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the authorities have divided the analysis of the situation into three essential components: distribution infrastructure through gas station networks; wholesale storage and sales infrastructure outside the airport; infrastructure exclusively dedicated to aircraft refueling at Chișinău Airport.
“At the current stage, everything is operating normally. There is no danger that Chișinău International Airport will run out of fuel. Until the end of the month, stocks and deliveries are fully ensured,” Bolea specified.
The official emphasized that all decisions will be made in accordance with the international commitments of the Republic of Moldova, in the context of aligning with the sanctions regime imposed against the Russian Federation.
“When we talk about sanctions against an aggressor, we are speaking from a principled position – we align with justice and truth. At the same time, we are concerned with maintaining the functionality of critical infrastructure and finding sustainable solutions for supply,” he emphasized.
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu confirmed that the Government is considering multiple options to avoid any risk of the interruption of Chișinău Airport's operation.
“We are discussing this situation with utmost caution. We cannot make hasty decisions but must find reasonable solutions that ensure energy security and the normal functioning of the airport. It is infrastructure of national importance, and its supply cannot be interrupted. In the immediate future, we will publicly announce the adopted solutions,” said the Prime Minister.
The Executive will soon announce the final decisions regarding the supply scheme of Chișinău International Airport, ensuring that both international commitments and the needs of the national economy are respected.
