Moldovan parliament speaker, at World Conference of Presidents of Parliament, says Moldova chooses democracy in face of external threats

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has reaffirmed Moldova's commitment to European integration and strengthening democracy, at the Sixth World Conference of Presidents of Parliaments, held in Geneva.

“Moldova stands firmly on the European path,” said Igor Grosu, expressing gratitude for the continuous support on behalf of partner states.

According to him, international support is vital during a global period marked by “uncertainty, conflicts and multiple crises – from military aggressions and hybrid wars to climate changes.”

The Moldovan official emphasized that, in these complicated times, the role of parliaments was not boiled down to legislating, but involves protecting democracy, ensuring peace and defending citizens.

“The Parliament of Moldova, which I have the honor to lead, is firmly committed to supporting peace, justice and sustainable development,” Grosu said. He highlighted the recent reforms aimed at strengthening the rule of law, aid provided to refugees and significant steps taken in the process of joining the European Union – “a project of peace and prosperity, which unites us in a community of values.”

Referring to the next autumn parliamentary elections, Igor Grosu said that Moldovans would have to choose between two directions: submission to the influence of the Russian Federation and oligarchic groups, or continuing on the European path.

“Moldovans have always known how to choose what is right for their families and their country in critical moments. We believe in the peaceful and prosperous future of the European Union and believe that together we can protect peace, democracy, and unity,” concluded the Moldovan parliament speaker.

The World Conference of Presidents of Parliament is organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations. The meeting takes place every five years and represents a forum for engagement and high-level dialogue among parliamentary leaders from around the world.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union is a global organization comprising 181 parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary bodies. The IPU was established in 1889, being the world's first multilateral political organization. It supports peace, democracy and sustainable development, contributing to the strengthening of parliaments.
