USA describes relationship with Moldova as excellent; U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Chisinau says sides work on variety of topics
The relations between the United States and Moldova can be described as 'excellent and strong,' said Nick Pietrowicz, the Charge d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau. The American diplomat emphasized that the agenda of cooperation with Moldova was extensive, covering a variety of fields, and the interaction with the new government was active and constructive.
‘’The relations are excellent, strong. We constantly work together on a variety of topics. We have collaborated with the new government and have interacted with the new ministers. We continue to cooperate on important issues for both countries, in order to maintain a solid relationship,’’ Nick Pietrowicz told the public television station Moldova 1.
Pietrowicz noted the 130 million-dollar-worth investment provided by the United States for the construction of the Straseni–Gutinas power line, an essential project for the energy security of Moldova. According to the diplomat, this amount represents ‘’approximately one dollar from each American taxpayer,’’ demonstrating both Washington's appreciation for Moldova and the generosity of the American people.
‘’It is evidence of how the United States values Moldova, but also of the generosity of the American people. We want to help, because we understand how important this project is for the security and economic prosperity of Moldova. The line to Gutinas will provide Moldova with a third stable, secure energy connection of European origin. It will ensure true energy independence and redundancy, so that electricity continues to flow, the lights stay on and people can keep using the internet,’’ the American diplomat added.
The diplomat stressed that the investment represented not only support for Moldova, but also an opportunity for American companies to benefit from the country's economic growth:
‘’We believe it will be an opportunity for American companies to benefit from Moldova's economic growth. For us, Moldova is a country with great potential, we see a lot of potential for American corporations, and we want to be part of this development,’’ Pietrowicz stated.
The diplomat reiterated the US commitment to continue close cooperation with Moldova and to support projects that strengthen the state’s democracy, economy, and energy resilience.
The Straseni–Gutinas line is a 400 kV high-voltage overhead power line that will connect the power stations in Straseni and Gutinas, representing Moldova's third direct interconnection with Romania's electricity grid and, implicitly, the European network. The total estimated length of the line is about 190 km. The project is funded by the US, with an investment allocated for the complete construction of approximately 130 million dollars.
The diplomatic relations between Moldova and the USA were established on February 18, 1992. Over the decades, Washington and Chisinau have maintained a constant dialogue and signed numerous agreements. The bilateral legal framework includes over 126 documents (agreements, memorandums, declarations), covering such fields as economy, security, justice, education and science.
