First ever medical event in Moldova: child saved through liver transplant
A one-year and four-month-old child has received a new lease on life following a liver transplant from a living donor, performed at the Timofei Mosneaga Republican Clinical Hospital. The surgery lasted ten hours and marks the first liver transplant performed in Moldova on such a young pediatric patient.
According to the administration of the Timofei Mosneaga Republican Clinical Hospital, the child was diagnosed with type I tyrosinemia, a rare and severe genetic disease affecting the metabolism of tyrosine, an essential amino acid in human nutrition.
The procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary medical team, coordinated by Professors Adrian Hotineanu, Victor Cojocaru, and Eugen Tcaciuc, with the participation of specialists in pediatric cardiac surgery, pediatric surgery and pediatrics.
The donor was a person moved by the child's case, seen on a TV show.
According to the cited source, after the transplant, the child was treated in intensive care and then transferred to the Congenital Heart Defects Surgery Department, benefiting from close monitoring and tailored treatment. Soon, the child will be discharged to continue recovery at home.
