Chisinau, 18 May /MOLDPRES/- International Museum Day is marked in the Republic of Moldova today.

On this day, the National Museum of Art opens the painting and graphics exhibition by Pavel Shillingovski, 140 years after the artist's birth.

Also, the National Museum of History of Moldova is currently offering its permanent exhibitions to visitors.

At the same time, the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History invites its visitors to see the originals of some documents regarding the foundation and the first years of activity of Noul Neamț Monastery, the largest monastic settlement in Bessarabia.

On 22-23 May, Fair of Folk Crafts will be held, which will be attended by over 20 folk craftsmen from all fields: potters, carpenters, weavers, leather, craftsmen who weave vegetable fibers, makes beads and musical instruments.

The International Council of Museums created International Museum Day in 1977. The organization chooses a different theme each year. Some of the topics were globalization, indigenous peoples, reducing cultural gaps and caring for the environment.

Every year, all the museums in the world are invited to participate to promote the role of museums, organizing special and free activities for the public, around the theme of the year. International Museum Day has become increasingly popular since its inception. For example, in 2009, 20,000 museums in more than 90 countries attended this day. In 2012, the number of participating museums increased to 30,000 in 129 countries.
