BTA: Doylada Custom Reenacted in Bulgarian Village of Radyuvene

The reenactment of the Doylada custom took place in the north-central Bulgarian village of Radyuvene on Sunday. The traditional custom, revived 18 years ago, brings women together to make wishes and predictions for marriage. Since ancient times, this ritual has become a celebration for the whole village, said host Emiliya Valkova.

She explained what the tradition dictates. The night before Doylada, the unmarried women in the village gather at the home of the youngest of them and place their rings, marked with a sign, in a pot of water. The pot is left overnight under the stars and in the morning, before sunrise, it is taken to a well or a drinking water fountain. There, young women and bachelors, parents, relatives, and neighbours gather to find out what the maids' fortune will be. During the ritual, a group of women sing and make wishes as the youngest takes the rings out of the pot one by one, thus revealing who each of the rings' owners will marry.

Among the participants by the village's drinking water fountain this year were both amateur performers from the Col. Stoyan Edrev – 1895 Community Centre, which organized the event, and dancers from the local Radyuvena Kitka ensemble.

Due to the cold weather, snowfall, and strong wind, the celebration was then moved to the community centre hall for singing and dancing.
