Partnership for safety and stability: Moldova to become associated member of international organization RACVIAC

The Republic of Moldova will change its status from observer state to associated member within the Centre for Security Cooperation - RACVIAC. The draft decision providing for this change was approved today by the Government.

Minister of Defence Anatolie Nosatîi said that the new status will serve as a necessary tool for relaunching institutional cooperation with RACVIAC and for strengthening the presence of the Republic of Moldova in regional security formats.

“Deepening cooperation with strategic partners, as well as with international and regional organizations in the field of security, is a key priority of the defence policy of the Republic of Moldova. Participation, as an associated member, in the activities of the organization will contribute to achieving our strategic objectives for a safe and stable environment for citizens,” Nosatîi said.

According to the Ministry of Defence, participation in the Centre’s activities will be voluntary, without fixed expenditures from the state budget.

RACVIAC is an organization whose goal is the continuous promotion of peace and stability in the region of Southeast Europe. Through its efforts, the Centre actively contributes to strengthening the institutional capacities of states in addressing contemporary security challenges, providing them with support in implementing and efficiently fulfilling the commitments undertaken on EU and Euro-Atlantic agendas. The organization currently brings together 29 states with the status of full member, associated member, and observer, among them Romania, Austria, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

The Republic of Moldova has stepped up its participation within the RACVIAC Centre of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, becoming, in April 2004, a full member state. During the period 2005–2011, representatives of the Ministry of Defence actively contributed to activities organized under the aegis of RACVIAC, particularly in the fields of conversion of military infrastructure and reintegration of released personnel, politico-military aspects in South Eastern Europe, implementation of treaties on conventional arms control, and training in specialized military terminology.
