President about Earth Day: Each of us must contribute to protecting nature

On Earth Day, we are reminded that it is in our power to take care of the planet we live on. This is why we are expanding forested areas and investing in the development of clean energy sources – and we will continue these efforts. President Maia Sandu conveyed the message today in the context of Earth Day.

The head of state noted the intensification of actions to protect rivers and reduce pollution.

“Each of us must contribute to protecting nature by using the planet’s resources responsibly and avoiding waste – because today’s indifference becomes tomorrow’s burden for our children,” Maia Sandu stressed.

Earth Day is marked in more than 190 countries around the world. It is dedicated to education and civic engagement. Every year, institutions, organizations and authorities carry out a wide range of activities – from tree planting and clean‑up campaigns to educational projects and public awareness initiatives.

The first edition took place on April 22, 1970, in the United States of America and is considered the starting point of the modern environmental protection movement. The initiative belongs to Senator Gaylord Nelson, who was inspired by a major ecological disaster that occurred off the coast of California.
