Mayoral election in central Moldova village might be repeated

The local elections held in the Bolduresti commune, central Nisporeni district, on June 1, 2025, might be repeated after the North Court of Appeal declared the results null.

The court's decision was pronounced today and follows the challenge submitted by the counter-candidate Sergiu Bulicanu, who asked for the cancellation of the elections won by Nicanor Ciochina.

The judges at the North Court of Appeals partially annulled the decision of the Ungheni Court dated June 25, 2025 and ordered a revote in the Bolduresti commune. The decision is enforceable, but can be appealed to the Supreme Court of Justice within three days.

The Ungheni Court has earlier cancelled the validation of Nicanor Ciochina's mandate, but he was reinstated as interim mayor by the vote of seven local councilors.

Ciochina was detained on February 21, 2024, a day after he fatally hit a 14-year-old boy and fled the scene. According to prosecutors, to hide his involvement, the mayor changed the license plates of the vehicle involved in the accident and staged another traffic accident with another vehicle. Initially, both he and the alleged accomplice denied the allegations.
