Moldovan head of state says European funds to be directed to developing infrastructure, education, economy, energy sector

The European Union will invest 1.9 billion euros in Moldova in the next three years. President Maia Sandu has made statements to this effect at the conclusion of the first Moldova-European Union summit. According to the head of state, the funds will be directed towards developing infrastructure, education, the economy, and the energy sector in all regions of the country.

The Moldovan president noted that 200 kilometers of regional and district roads will be repaired from the first installment of funding, with work set to start in localities such as Maximovca-Mereni, Corjeuți-Caracușenii Vechi, Hârbovăț-Onișcani, Chioselia-Țărăncuța, Vadul Rașcov-Șestaci, and others.

“Over 100 localities will benefit from paving of local roads, added Sandu, mentioning communes such as Corjeuți, Văleni, Rîșcova, Feștelița, Cişmichioi, and Albota de Jos,” said Maia Sandu.

The head of state specified that education was another priority area. “Starting from  September 1, 2025, the pupils in grades 5 to 9 will receive free meals, through the renovation of school canteens across the country,” Maia Sandu also said.

She specified that EU’s support would also go to entrepreneurs and young people, through grants and programs that encourage investment and business development.

“Young people employed in strategic industries, such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, or food, will receive a salary supplement of 3,000 lei for one year, to encourage them to stay home,” said Sandu.

At the same time, for a cleaner environment, 130 localities will receive waste collection equipment, and in the field of energy security, the Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line will be completed this year, with Straseni-Gutinas and Balti-Suceava lines to be constructed.

“Investments will also be made in renewable sources - solar, wind, biogas - as well as in energy efficiency projects, dedicated to households, schools, hospitals and agri-food enterprises,” the Moldovan president said.

According to the cited source, the EU will finance the modernization of the Iasi-Ungheni railway line, a project that will reduce train travel time and increase rail transport capacity between Moldova and Romania, strengthening the connection with the entire European Union.
