PHOTO, VIDEO // Prosecutor General took oath of office today

Prosecutor General Alexandru Machidon took the oath of office today. President Maia Sandu attended the event and highlighted the importance of “consolidating and strengthening the results achieved by the Prosecutor General’s Office in order to regain citizens’ trust both in the institution and in the justice system as a whole”.

The head of state congratulated the new Prosecutor General and expressed confidence in the institution’s ability to fight corruption and organized crime, which are decisive elements for strengthening the rule of law.

“There are several issues that the Prosecutor’s Office must address – from combating corruption, drug, arms and human trafficking to new threats such as financial and cyber crimes, including those related to interference in democratic processes in the Republic of Moldova. Going forward, the greatest risk to the European integration process concerns our ability to build a genuine rule-of-law state that serves strictly the interests of the citizens and of the state. I assured the Prosecutor General of my full support in his mission to achieve this fundamental objective,” Maia Sandu noted.

For his part, the new Prosecutor General said that this position entails direct responsibility before the law, society, and every citizen who expects justice.

“The path to this moment has not been an easy one. Serving as acting Prosecutor General, the institutional responsibility, and the external evaluation process have been not only procedural stages, but also a test of integrity and resilience. Today I took the oath with full awareness of the responsibility that this position entails. The Prosecutor’s Office must remain an independent, credible and efficient institution that serves exclusively the law and the public interest,” said Alexandru Machidon.

Maia Sandu today signed the decree appointing Alexandru Machidon as Prosecutor General of the Republic of Moldova. He has served, since 28 May 2025, as acting Prosecutor General, and starting 30 April 2026 he will officially assume the mandate of full-fledged Prosecutor General.

The appointment comes after the Superior Council of Prosecutors approved, at its meeting on 16 April this year, the report of the Evaluation Commission, which found that Alexandru Machidon meets the criteria of ethical and financial integrity, thereby passing the external evaluation.
