Writers from Moldova, Romania call for turning idea of unification into national priority

Writers from Moldova and Romania welcome the statements made by Presidents Maia Sandu and Nicusor Dan on the prospect of reunification. The Writers’ Union of Moldova and the Writers’ Union of Romania issued a joint communiqué, in which they advocated for turning this topic into a national priority, supported on both banks of the Prut River.

According to the document signed by the presidents of the two creative unions, Teo Chiriac and Varujan Vosganian, the unification of Moldova with Romania should be treated as a strategic goal, which is be publicly discussed and analyzed within a broad institutional and professional framework.

“Regardless of ideological options, Romanians on the two banks of the Prut share a common tradition, history, language, culture and literature,” the communiqué reads, emphasizing the idea of a shared national identity.

The two unions deem it necessary to move “from statements of intent to concrete actions,” by developing a realistic scenario for a possible reunification, from political, legal, economic, educational and cultural perspectives. In this regard, they propose the establishment of a group of experts on behalf of Romania and Moldova, who are to analyze the impact and steps of such a process.

The communiqué also recalls recent statements by president of Moldova, who stressed in an interview that any decision on unification belongs exclusively to Moldovan citizens and could represent a form of accelerated European integration.

It also mentions the position of the president of Romania, who said that the Romanian state stayed open to a possible reunification, in accordance with the will democratically expressed by the citizens of Moldova.

The Writers’ Union of Romania and the Writers’ Union of Moldova say that they receive these declarations “with hope” and recall the historical role of writers and intellectuals in supporting the ideal of unification, from the Union of 1859 and the Great Union of 1918 to the cultural resistance during the Soviet period and the assertion of the Romanian identity in Moldova.

According to the Agerpres agency, the Romanian Academy and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova on February 23 issued a call to the Romanian parliament regarding the possibility of creating a Chisinau Branch of the Romanian Academy, through the adoption of a draft law amending and supplementing Law no. 752/2001 on the organization and working of the Romanian Academy, a draft registered in the Senate under no. L72/2026.

“The Romanian Academy and the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, the supreme institutions for the recognition of Romanian intellectual values, hereby address this Appeal regarding the amendment of the 2001 Law of the Romanian Academy, in order to ensure the optimal functioning of the institution founded in Bucharest in 1866, including the possibility of creating a Chisinau Branch of the Romanian Academy. Our initiative is part of a natural and consistent process of institutional rapprochement between the two sister academies, a process reaffirmed by the Joint Declaration of December 30, 2025 and by the Joint Appeal of January 15, 2026, adopted on the National Culture Day,” reads the document signed at that time by the presidents of the two bodies.

The two institutions emphasize that spiritual, cultural, and scientific reunification represents the lasting foundation of any future political unity and the signatories consider that “this is a historic moment,” recalling that the Romanian Academy, founded in 1866, had from the very beginning the vocation of uniting Romanians, with three personalities from Bessarabia among its founding members.

“At a symbolic level, the creation of a Chisinau Branch of the Romanian Academy is a sure step toward the spiritual reunification of the Romanian Academy, reaffirming the organic bond between Romanians on both banks of the Prut. It is an institutional link in the chain that lays the groundwork for a lasting unity, built through education, science, and culture. The adoption of this legislative amendment is not an administrative act, but one of historical responsibility and a signal of confidence in the common future of Romanians within the European Union. We therefore ask you to support and adopt, as soon as possible, the necessary amendments to the Law of the Romanian Academy, to allow the creation of the Chisinau Branch. One hundred and sixty years after its founding, the Romanian Academy remains the most important institution of science, culture and intellectual creation for the entire Romanian people, for all Romanians, wherever they may live. It is therefore natural that scientists and creators of Moldova should be part of the entire edifice of intellectual recognition and research represented by the Romanian Academy,” the call also reads.
