Monument in memory of Moldovans dead for country's integrity inaugurated in Balti city
Chisinau, 19 June /MOLDPRES/ - A monument in the memory of the heroes who died in the combat actions for Moldova’s independence and integrity was inaugurated in Balti today.
The inauguration of this monument is meant to perpetuate the memory of Alexandru Babinschi, Anatol Calmațui and Sergiu Ostaf, who died on battlefield on the plateau from Cocieri in the spring and summer of 1992.
„Although the years move us away from those tragic events, the time not at all diminished the honour and respect for the nation’s martyrs, who sacrificed the dearest thing on the altar of the Motherland’s independence. Their deeds will remain on the pages of the history and will serve as example for the next generations,’’ reads a press release by the Interior Ministry (MAI).
The Transnistria War started on 2 March 1992 and lasted four months. The ceasefire agreement was signed on 21 July 1992; subsequently, the political negotiations on the Transnistrian conflict settlement started. According to the Defence Ministry, over 30,000 people participated in this conflict. As many as 300 servicemen and civilians died and 3,500 were wounded.
