Moldovan PM says government provides largest financial support for farmers in recent years - 6 billion lei

The government in recent years has provided the largest financial support for farmers, amounting to six billion lei in all. These resources have resulted in tangible outcomes for the development of the agricultural sector. Prime Minister Dorin Recean has made statements to this effect. He assured that the authorities would continue to support the farmers.

According to the PM, investments in agriculture have led to enhanced competitiveness of Moldovan products. For instance, wine exports have increased by about 20 per cent, the cattle stock has grown by 10 per cent and milk production has increased by 17 per cent.

Also, the quantities of Moldovan fruits and vegetables exported duty-free to the European Union have doubled – plums, apples, tomatoes, grapes, cherries, garlic, and grape juice.

“We are the world leaders in plums’ exports among countries in the northern hemisphere – holding a 73-per cent share of the EU market of plums. For the first time, Moldova can export poultry meat and A-category consumption eggs to the EU,” stated the Prime Minister.

At the same time, the state subsidizes up to 70 per cent of the cost of agricultural insurance policies. In 2024 alone, the state covered more than 61 million lei for farmers hit by severe weather conditions.

The prime minister also said that the area for irrigation had been expanded by over 1,000 hectares, and the area protected with anti-rain and anti-hail equipment extended to 961 hectares.

According to the PM, 402 farms have been modernized in just three years, with government’s direct support, and small and medium-sized farmers have access to loans on easy terms: with an interest rate of only 5.1 per cent, a grant component of up to 30 per cent and flexible repayment for 5 years.

Moreover, Moldovan wines have won over 7,500 international medals, which means that the country is officially the most awarded one in Eastern Europe in terms of wines in the last decade.

“The government stands by the farmers. We are opening the EU market for Moldovan products, supporting the growth of high value-added products, taking care of the harvest and investing in the future of agriculture,” added Dorin Recean.
