Moldovan president chairs meeting of National Commission for European Integration
President Maia Sandu today chaired a meeting of the National Commission for European Integration (CNIE). During the event, the head of state emphasized the importance of maintaining the pace of reforms and good institutional coordination, in order to advance the process of joining the European Union. President Sandu reiterated that the strategic objective of Moldova – joining the European Union – required continuous effort, responsibility and meeting commitments made by all state institutions.
"We need to focus and work even better, with seriousness and responsibility. It's not just about checking off actions, but about making real changes where people expect them the most: in justice, in fighting corruption. Citizens want to see justice served. We have a window of opportunity, and it is our duty to do everything to not miss it."
President Sandu also made a call to the opposition – both parliamentary and extra-parliamentary – to support the European Union accession process: "We all need to talk to people, explain what European integration means and unite our efforts to combat misinformation on this topic."
The meeting was attended by European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, on a visit to Chisinau. Commissioner Kos presented the main conclusions regarding Moldova from the 2025 Enlargement Report, according to which the country has made the most progress out of all candidate states.
"There is no country among the 27 member states that is against Moldova's accession to the European Union. In the last year, you have made progress on all chapters," said Commissioner Marta Kos.
Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu presented the government's priorities in the EU accession process, while Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov informed CNIE members about the process of updating the National Accession Plan, so that it reflects the next steps in the negotiation process.
The National Commission for European Integration (CNIE) is the main coordination body for Moldova's accession process to the European Union. Established by presidential decree, CNIE is led by President Maia Sandu and includes representatives of all key institutions involved in the European integration process – the government, parliament, presidency, and other public authorities, as well as representatives of civil society. The Commission sets strategic priorities, monitors progress and coordinates inter-institutional efforts to implement reforms and align national legislation with European Union standards and norms.
