Moldova increases renewable energy production capacity 11.6 times in last five years
In the last five years, the Republic of Moldova has increased its installed capacity for renewable energy sources by 11.6 times, reaching 897.50 MW at the end of September 2025. These figures were presented today by the National Center for Sustainable Energy.
Photovoltaic installations are the most widespread renewable energy technology, representing 71% of the total installed capacity, with a cumulative power of 640.57 MW. They are followed by wind installations, whose total power has reached 233.02 MW, accounting for 26% of the total. The capacities of hydro and biogas installations record values of 16.75 MW (2%) and 7.16 MW (1%), respectively.
According to the NCSE, a considerable portion of the renewable electricity-generating capacities sells the produced energy on the open market.
The Republic of Moldova has recently reached a historic milestone regarding green energy production. Thus, on Saturday, August 23, at 12:00, the country's electricity consumption was entirely covered by local energy production from renewable sources.
The authorities have ambitious objectives in this field, having set strategic targets for 2030: at least 27% energy from renewable sources in the gross final energy consumption and at least 31.2% electricity from renewable sources in the gross final electricity consumption.
