Moldova, Canada discuss expanding bilateral cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi today met  Bucharest-based Canadian Ambassador to Gavin Buchan.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions focused on deepening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in areas of security, economic development and support for Moldova's European path. The officials highlighted Canada's constant contribution to modernizing institutions, combating misinformation and strengthening the country's resilience.

Minister Mihai Popsoi expressed gratitude for the financial and technical support provided by Canada over the years, noting its importance in the context of the present regional challenges.

“We express gratitude for Canada's commitment and constant support, including during difficult security times. Canadian assistance, including the one aimed at strengthening energy and democratic resilience, has a significant impact on our adaptation and modernization capabilities,” the Moldovan diplomacy head said.

The sides reconfirmed their mutual interest in developing concrete projects to strengthen the Moldovan-Canadian partnership, to the benefit of the citizens of both countries.

The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Canada were established on February 20, 1992.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2023, the volume of Moldovan-Canadian trade recorded values of over 15.454 million U.S. dollars, showing a positive trend. On this period, Moldova's exports to Canada amounted to 10.1 million dollars, while imports from Canada stood at about 5.3 million dollars.
