Historic Moment. European leaders expected in Chișinău today for first Moldova-EU bilateral summit

European leaders are expected today in Chișinău for the first Moldova – European Union bilateral summit. The event is organized under the auspices of President Maia Sandu.

The historic event will begin at 17:00 and will conclude around 20:00. The Republic of Moldova will be represented by President Maia Sandu, Speaker Igor Grosu, and Prime Minister Dorin Recean. From the EU, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will participate.

Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov said “Moldova – European Union Summit is a premiere for our country, a historic event marking the beginning of a new level of cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union.”

“It is for the first time that such a high-level meeting is organized in Chișinău. This summit confirms that Moldova is fully committed to European path. As a society, we have shown a firm commitment to the reform process, and the results of these efforts are recognized and appreciated internationally. The presence of European institutional leaders – Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Antonio Costa, President of the European Council – in Chișinău, during a period marked by complex global political challenges, is a clear confirmation that the European Union stands by the citizens of the Republic of Moldova and strongly supports our national objective: accession to the European Union,” said Cristina Gherasimov.

“From the Republic of Moldova, President Maia Sandu, Parliament President Igor Grosu, and Prime Minister Dorin Recean will participate in this summit. During the discussions, we will address essential topics for our country's future: the accession process, political dialogue and the reforms implemented so far, economic growth and sectoral cooperation, combating hybrid threats and strengthening our resilience, as well as major security challenges in the region and internationally. This summit is an important step towards achieving a European, secure, and prosperous Moldova,” said Gherasimov.

According to the official agenda, topics related to Moldova's accession process to the European Union, European support in the context of the war in Ukraine, and the implementation of the Growth Plan for Moldova will be discussed during the meeting. Additionally, strengthening trade relations, cooperation in security and defense, energy transition, digital transformation, and facilitating contacts between citizens will be addressed.

In the context of the meeting, some traffic restrictions will be imposed in the capital. Thus, between 08:00 and 22:00, access to certain public places in Chișinău municipality, the city center, and avenues connecting to Chișinău International Airport will be temporarily limited. Additionally, meetings, mass events, roadwork, and maintenance or tree cutting in the streets where official convoys will pass will be restricted.

The General Police Inspectorate and the Chișinău Municipal Police Department will ensure public order, and drivers are encouraged to comply with the requirements of traffic officers.
