Prime Minister: Moldova must be ready to conclude EU accession negotiations by late 2027
The Republic of Moldova has made the most significant progress on its European path among all candidate countries and, in just one year, advanced four times faster on this trajectory. In the coming period, our country has an even greater responsibility, with more work to be done, and the authorities are committed to continuing reforms so that the Republic of Moldova is ready to conclude accession negotiations by late 2027. The statements were made today by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu at the Conference Enlargement Report 2025: Progress and Future Priorities of the Republic of Moldova, held in Chișinău.
The Prime Minister stated that "it is impressive that, after a sad period, spanning several years, our country has now entered a new stage of hope, with a secure future for all citizens".
"I have spoken many times at different conferences about Moldova. I have presented Moldova in many countries. I have spoken at general assemblies about Moldova's success. But now, for the first time, I can speak not about the ascent of other countries to the European Union, but about the ascent and the progress made by my country, the Republic of Moldova, on the European path," the official said.
Alexandru Munteanu emphasized that our country has made the largest leap in its preparedness level for accession. The official highlighted the progress achieved in each negotiation chapter, from the rule of law and economy, to energy, digitalization, education, food safety, and social policies.
"In just one year, Moldova advanced four times faster. And this progress is made thanks to the people who have read hundreds and thousands of pages of European legislation, who have worked nights and weekends, and who have been in negotiations in Brussels to present the position of the Republic of Moldova. Progress is made not only with those who worked here in the Government, but also with teachers who educate a European generation of young people, with entrepreneurs who work according to European standards, with journalists, and civil society," stated the Prime Minister.
However, according to him, the praise for the progress made by our country comes with even more responsibility, but also with more actions to be implemented further.
"Words of praise come deservedly and place an even greater burden on our shoulders—the responsibility for tomorrow—because we can enjoy the results we have achieved, but euphoria lasts a few minutes. After that, we must realize that there is even more to do. (...) We know the road is not easy, we know we have much to do, but it is precisely this resilience, this political will, these transformations of state institutions that make Moldova European," the head of the Government opined.
Alexandru Munteanu also mentioned that in recent years, the authorities have managed unprecedented crises and implemented reforms that had stalled for long periods, and going forward, the goal of improving every citizen's life will be the foundation of all government actions.
"We have managed crises with a straight back, ensured stability, organized fair elections, strengthened state institutions, and advanced in reforms in areas where progress had stalled for years: justice, economy, energy, infrastructure. People are driving on European roads, can make bank transactions through SEPA, and talk on the phone in European countries at low rates. And this will always be the case going forward. The core of all our reforms and actions is how to improve citizens' lives. Certainly, an economic growth, upon which we are working, and I hope our citizens will enjoy the results in a visible future," Alexandru Munteanu pointed out.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the goal of the Republic of Moldova is to become a member state of the European Union and set the objective of being ready to conclude accession negotiations by the end of 2027. In addition, the official conveyed a message of unity and society's consolidation to achieve this goal.
"We know the direction. The Republic of Moldova is a member state of the European Union. We know what we have to do. We must be ready to close accession negotiations by the end of 2027. We have a plan—the National Accession Program. We have a dedicated team and a whole country supporting us. We began this journey with hope, and we continue it with confidence. Unity and consolidation are very important to us, and I hope the European path is a platform for consolidation for all of us, regardless of our political or personal views. I hope we will reach a national consensus in this regard. This is our role: to lead Moldova on the European path and not allow ourselves to be stopped on this path. Our home is Europe. I believe we must realize that we are not going to Europe, but bringing Europe home," Alexandru Munteanu stated.
Chișinău hosts today the Conference "Enlargement Report 2025: Progress and Future Priorities of the Republic of Moldova", analyzing the progress made by the Republic of Moldova on the European path and the priorities for 2026, based on the conclusions and recommendations formulated by the European Commission in the Enlargement Report 2025. The event brings together representatives of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, international partners, academia, business sector and civil society.
The conference will include various discussion panels throughout the day, with the participation of several guests. The special guest of the event will be European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, who is visiting the Republic of Moldova.
On November 4, the European Commission adopted the annual enlargement package, assessing the progress made by partner states in the last 12 months on the European integration path. The document mentions that the Republic of Moldova has made significant progress, completing the technical screening stage and meeting the conditions for opening several negotiation clusters.
