Health minister: Over 220 people addressed Emergency Hospital in last 24 hours

More than 220 patients sought medical attention at the Emergency Reception Unit (ERU) of the Institute of Emergency Medicine in Chișinău in just 24 hours, dozens of whom were in critical condition. The situation has been described as "extremely difficult" by Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco, who called for responsibility and respect towards medical staff.

According to the minister, on 14 October, Chișinău's Dedication Day, there were 225 visits registered, which means more than nine cases per hour.

"What is the connection between holidays in Moldova and intensive care units? I will present below yesterday's statistics of a single hospital, and you can draw your own conclusions. On October 14, at the Emergency Reception Unit of the Institute of Emergency Medicine, 225 visits were registered, that is over 9 visits per hour. The majority were very serious: 28 patients were in the red zone, meaning in critical condition, between life and death. There, complex teams are needed: surgeons, neurologists, neurosurgeons, traumatologists, intensive care doctors, cardiologists. Movies are a trifle compared to the reality there," said Ala Nemerenco.

Among the severe cases, 19 were strokes, and the rest were primarily trauma cases from road accidents.

The minister emphasized that most patients arriving at the ERU were directed to operating rooms or intensive care units, where, by Monday evening, there were no more free spaces.

In a public message, Ala Nemerenco called on citizens for caution and solidarity:

"When you arrive at the ERU with an emergency, but not a critical one, and it seems like you are waiting too long, think about how doctors are fighting for someone's life next to you," the minister stated.

Moreover, the official urged people not to postpone medical consultations, not to drive under the influence of alcohol, and to be careful behind the wheel.

The official mentioned that hundreds of critical cases could be prevented, and the costs of these emergency treatments amount to millions of lei, money coming from the contributions of all citizens.

"Take care of your own health and that of your loved ones and respect the doctors," concluded the Minister of Health.

On 14 October, 194 localities in the country, including the capital, celebrated Dedication Day.
