Moldova's Action and Solidarity Party puts forward candidacy of Alexandru Munteanu for PM office

The Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) today announced that it would wait for the validation of the MPs’ mandates by the Constitutional Court and the convening of the parliament meeting by President Maia Sandu. Following the creation of the  parliamentary factions, PAS will put forward the candidacy of Alexandru Munteanu for the position of prime minister.

Alexandru Munteanu, an economist, university professor, and businessman, is recognized for his extensive experience in investments and his involvement in international educational and cultural projects. Born in Chisinau on January 20, 1964, Munteanu pursued university studies in physics and worked at the Institute of Applied Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, and later at the Technical University of Moldova as a lecturer and vice-dean of the International Faculty.

With the establishment of the National Bank of Moldova, he held leadership positions in the Foreign Exchange Operations Section and the Department of Foreign Relations. Munteanu pursued postgraduate studies at Columbia University, New York, specializing in international relations, banking, and finance, after which he worked at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.

Alexandru Munteanu is the founder and president of the Alliance Française in  Moldova, an organization he has led for over three decades. Munteanu is also one of the founders of AmCham Moldova (the American Chamber of Commerce).

In 1997, he returned to Moldova as deputy director of the Center for Strategic Investigations and Reforms (CISR) and later director of the WNISEF American Investment Fund representative office. He held positions on the boards of numerous enterprises in Moldova and Ukraine and led the Direct Investment Department of Dragon Capital in Ukraine. In 2016, he founded 4i Capital Partners, an investment company operating in Eastern Europe.

Munteanu has also played an active role in international education, being a member and president of the Board of Trustees at the Pechersk School International (PSI) in Kyiv, an International Baccalaureate (IB) accredited institution, and was involved in the Business Council alongside the Stability Pact from Vienna, Austria.

For his contributions, Alexandru Munteanu was awarded the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor (Légion d'Honneur) of the French Republic in 2006.

PAS emphasizes that Moldova needs well-educated individuals, with extensive economic experience, in order to lead the economic development process and the accession to the European Union.

“We thank Mr. Munteanu for choosing to get involved in the country's interest, at a time when his expertise is crucial for Moldova's reforms and progress,” Parliament Speaker, PAS president Igor Grosu said.

On October 13, Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that he was stepping down from politics and from the position of prime minister.
