Joint control at Sculeni border crossing point; Moldovan government rules to initiate negotiations

Joint control will be implemented at the western Moldova Sculeni border crossing. The cabinet today ruled to initiate negotiations on the draft Agreement on the matter between the governments of Moldova and Romania.

At the government meeting, Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin said that Sculeni-Sculeni would become the fourth border crossing point where the concept of coordinated control will be implemented.

“By achieving this goal, crossing the border will be faster and simpler, safety will increase, due to closer collaboration between authorities, trade exchanges, and relations between communities on both sides of the Prut River will become more dynamic. All these actions are meant to make the border more efficient and more welcoming for all those who cross it,” said Daniella Misail-Nichitin.

Currently, coordinated control at the Moldovan-Romanian border is applied at the Leuseni-Albita and Giurgiulesti-Galati crossing points.

The implementation of coordinated control at the Galati-Giurgiulesti border crossing was launched in late last August, following a visit to Moldova by  Romanian Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. At that time, authorities said that, by the end of this year, the necessary infrastructure would be prepared for applying coordinated control at the Sculeni - Sculeni border crossing.

Additionally, coordinated control is also to be implemented at the Cantemir (Moldova) – Falciu (Romania) railway border crossing point.

Coordinated control is defined as the border crossing control carried out separately by the exit state's control personnel followed consecutively by the entry state's staff, conducted on the territory of a single state.
